The Very Hairs of Your Head...

I mentioned a few posts ago that I would try to do something silly to lighten the mood. Perhaps this story will suffice.

As best I can tell, I think I have some chapstick in my hair. I noticed at the end of last week that the hair on the top of my head felt weird, a little waxy. Since I get up fairly early I figured maybe I zoned out and didn’t rinse the conditioner out well or something. The next day I noticed it again so I started to suspect my new shampoo. I still didn’t think much of it as I had other things on my mind.

The following day my husband figured out that my four year old had gotten chapstick all over the bathroom. We still haven’t pieced together the whole crime scene, but I believe that she was trying to clean out the cap of the chapstick with her finger (since she likely jams the cap on without retracting the chapstick) and then tried to get it off her fingers with whatever was nearby.

Being the sleuth that I am, I took that newfound info and checked my comb. It appeared to have a bit of a wax on it, so I washed it and thought the mystery was solved. No more waxy head.

But I was wrong, I still have waxy hair although it is subsiding. My newest theory is that chapstick and hair are quite fond of each other. This morning I tried every shampoo in our shower along with the bar soap, and behold, the waxy hair remaineth.

Being also a resourceful girl, I decided to google “remove chapstick from hair” but I came up empty-handed. It appears I am the first person in history to have such a mishap. Don’t I feel lucky.

So that is my story. What can I say, motherhood isn’t always pretty.

Since the waxy feeling seems to be slowly going away, I think I’ll just wait it out. Time has a way of taking care of things like this. If things aren’t looking better by this weekend, I’ll have to pull out the big guns and call the prayer chain.

Jesus replied, "What is impossible with men is possible with God." Luke 18:27

I tried an organic shampoo with biotin - I might has well have had cradle cap.

try using a little laundry soap to get it out -- or better yet, vinegar.

i was swimming in the gulf of mexico one year about six months after an oil spill. i endws up with tar specs all over me and a huge tar ball in my hair. the only thing that got it out was using Tide laudry powder on my head, followed by lots of conditioner. lol!

I'd be trying a hot curling iron with paper towels, kind of like you do to take candle wax out of a tablecloth....

Thanks Ladies. I'll give those a try!

Try vegetable oil. Remember, like dissolves like!

How is your hair doing!

I had mine straightened a couple of weeks ago, colored this morning (back to my normal straight and hopefully close to my normal color)

I would say it's about the same. I tried vegetable oil and dawn, but no luck.

I guess I'll try the Tide next.

I hate to ruin my story but I'm not sure the culprit is Chapstick anymore. I've never had any luck keeping chapstick on my lips for more than 5 minutes so I find it hard to believe it would take over a week now to get out.

It is very, very slowly coming out. I think I will need to either wait it out or shave my head.

Well...if you keep licking your hair the way we all lick our lips... (lol)

Maybe it's worth a trip to the doctor so you can rule out that it's a medical problem.

A medical problem! Are you kidding Michele?

Hi Carrie,
I wanted to know if you were ever able to resolve the waxy hair issue..
I too, woke up last week with a strange waxy coating on the top of my head, by the root of my hair, but only in a small patch. I thought I used too much hair cream, and the next time i washed it, the wax was still there. I then blamed my conditioner. I'm actually getting quite worried that it might be something medical...especially since it seems to be spreading. Did your hair fix itself?
Thanks!

I have this same problem, it isn't chap stick. I think it's a hormonal thing. I got it the first time towards the end of pregnancy. Now that my son is 6 months old, I've had it three more times including right now. NOTHING fixes it although last time it seemed to clear up when I used Dr. Bronner's soap but that isn't working this time. I'd love to know if anyone figures out what this is, it grosses me out. I have to wear my hair pulled back, it looks so disgusting when I don't (probably does when I do but it is slightly hidden). Help!!!
